The Butterfly Ginkgo Collection is Michael Aram's most celebrated work — and once you understand why, it's impossible to look at a piece from it the same way again. The collection takes its inspiration from the maidenhair ginkgo tree, a species so ancient it predates the dinosaurs and so resilient it was the first living thing to regrow after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Michael Aram sees in the ginkgo leaf an emblem of transformation and survival — and into each leaf he has pressed the delicate imprint of a butterfly wing, so that the boundary between flora and fauna, between plant and creature, dissolves entirely.
Every piece in the Butterfly Ginkgo Collection is cast in hand-textured metal — oxidised brass, nickelplate, and stainless steel with 24K goldplate accents — and finished individually by hand. The result is metalwork that reads differently in morning light than in candlelight, that rewards close inspection with details you'll notice for years after you've owned the piece. Michael's workshop in New Delhi produces each piece to the same exacting standard: no two are exactly alike, and the slight variation in patina and surface is a hallmark of the casting process, not an inconsistency.
